Chapter 83 History - Page 2
As the 80's came, the Chapter kept growing and meetings moved to new places including the homes of Drina Abel, Jim Gibson, Curt and Betty DeBaun, Keith Welsh, and Pete Peterson, the shops of Rose-Hulman, Tom Flock, John Blouch, Chuck Rubeck, Harry Foy, and Garland Wadsworth, and two airports, Clinton and Aeroplanes. Aeroplanes is a grass strip south of Terre Haute that was opened as a partnership between Jim Gibson and Pete Peterson. Bill Ax was the most active pilot at Aeroplanes and was also its first groundskeeper. This time was the beginning of the fly-out meetings which are the standard of the Chapter now.
It was also during this time that Tom Flock began rebuilding Waco UPF-7's. Tom has gone on to restore 7 of the classic Waco's and has won numerous Oshkosh awards for his workmanship. In fact, his reputation grew so far and wide that Tom was one of the early inductees into the Antique Aircraft Hall of Fame. Three of Tom's aircraft were featured in one of the EAA Calendars and one year, Tom had three award winners at OSH at the same time. One of Tom's recent restorations is now owned by Tom McMurtry, an Edwards test pilot and NASA pilot who flew the NASA 747 when the Space Shuttle Orbiter as mounted on its back.
