In 1992, the Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA, started a program
known as Young Eagles. The purpose of this program was to provide 1,000,000 (yes, that's a million) kids their first aviation experience including an
airplane ride at no cost to them. The EAA wanted to do this before the 100th anniversary of manned powered flight on December 17, 2003, about a
10-year period. Enlisting the support of all EAA members, the quest began. The Young Eagles program flew 7,458 before the end on 1992.
On November 13, 2003, the 1,000,000th Young Eagle was registered in the World's Largest Logbook
tracking Young Eagle flights.
Now fast forward to 2006, and we see that over 35,000 EAA members have
participated in the Young Eagles Program. Over 1,200,000 Young Eagles have flown as of March 2006.
Lots of Young Eagles have been flown in the Terre Haute area by the
members of your local EAA Chapter 83.
